Appointments for Seattle Egg DonorsThe appointments involved in the egg donor process are as follows:
Once you complete the medical screen and all your lab work is returned, then you will move ahead with the egg donation cycle. The entire egg donation cycle takes about 6 - 7 weeks from start of the first birth control pill that “kicks off” the cycle, to the day you have your retrieval. Most of the process will be done on your own time. In the last week and a half of the cycle, the appointments involve what is generally a painless ultrasound of your ovaries to monitor egg development and a blood draw to check your hormone levels. You will need to be available for approximately 30-45 minutes for each of these appointments. These appointments are always first thing in the morning so that your results can be reviewed by the doctor and instructions given to you for that evening’s medication. *** These appointments cannot be scheduled at any other time of day and cannot be missed as they are essential for your health and safety in the process and the success of the cycle. Please consider this commitment very carefully. **** Over the course of a week and a half you will have anywhere between 4 and 8 of these appointments depending on how quickly or slowly your ovaries are responding to the hormone stimulation. The last day of the cycle is the egg retrieval. Although the retrieval itself only takes about 20 minutes, you will not be able to drive or return to work or school that day because you are given anesthesia for the procedure. You need to go home and rest/recuperate the remainder of the day. You will need someone to drive you home from the appt. You will be at the clinic for several hours in total. You may experience some discomfort for several days prior to the retrieval and/or in the first few days to a week following the procedure. This generally includes tenderness, discomfort or bloating in the pelvic area. Extreme discomfort is rare. Most donors are able to return quickly to work and school. Generally, within a week after the procedure most donors feel pretty much back on track and close to 100% of donors are completely back to normal within 2-3 weeks post retrieval. Two weeks after the retrieval you will have your period and at that time will have a post-op visit and ultrasound at the clinic or a phone appt. follow-up. If you regularly use birth control you would begin it again with this period using back up protection this first month if you have intercourse. If you have a positive cycle outcome and choose to donate again, you are required to wait 2 months in between cycles. You may donate up to 6 times depending on the outcome of each cycle.
